We hand-mix our signature pigments in small batches and the process is more art than science. We then paint our fabric in layers to impart depth of color while also taking advantage of each piece’s rich vintage texture. Unlike garment dyeing or dip-dyeing, our hand painting process allows us to control the placement of color specifically on each piece. We layer hues, we blend complementary tones and we use color to highlight the natural texture of the vintage linen. We believe this is what makes each of our espanyolet pieces idiosyncratic, uneven, beautiful & one-of-a-kind.

Our process, like our materials also embraces a slow design philosophy that pays homage to the traditional ways of making things by hand. All of our designs are hand painted or hand-dyed using techniques like shibori or our own special way of making dye paintable. We love the art of creating one-of-a-kind pieces and are not interested in the mass production of textile goods. The layered, textured depth of our colors is like our materials: imperfect, with a story to tell.
