What made this project so wonderful wasn’t just that the client gave us carte blanche to create beauty in their home, but it was because we had fun doing it with these brave folks. They came along with us as we visited artisan after artisan on the island, they got excited about each & every detail and they collaborated creatively with us on all the decisions. Sure, yes, the result (we think!) is stunning, but the process was also exceptionally rewarding for us. Come along as we show you more!
The idea behind this project was to create beautiful spaces in our clients’ sea-front apartment that blended their Scandinavian sensibilities with our Mediterranean style. We would fill it with artisan and vintage furnishings, where a sense of who these clients are – and where the home is located (in Mallorca) – is honored.
And of course along the way we would create a soulfully balanced interior that paired individuality, simplicity and sanctuary with a connection to the elements, such as the soft shades of the Mallorcan countryside and the rustic textures of the Mediterranean landscape.
In getting to know these clients — who we now call friends — it was important that we listen to how they live – then offer bespoke ideas for a color palette, materials, upholstery, wall finishes and furniture. We loved suggesting how to integrate nature and natural elements throughout their home, and how they could enhance daily life. By treating their home’s location and history as the anchor throughout, we created an interior that flows seamlessly: combining our signature textiles with vintage furniture and objects purpose-made by the vast network of skilled artisans that we call collaborators and friends. The result is that every item in their home fits purposefully together.
This is our clients’ second home, so when they leave Copenhagen, they want to arrive to the warm embrace of Mallorca’s slow living lifestyle. So, the question is: what does it mean to live ‘Mediterranean’? You feel it. It’s open-plan living, where their lunches are eaten with their fingers and flow from the kitchen to the terrace to the chaise lounge and back. It’s their favorite comfy chair, perfectly angled to drink in their morning sunlight with their cortado. It’s a picnic basket, a linen throw and the scent of the sea spray on a warm day. This simple act of being present in life’s pleasures is the heart of Mediterranean living, which we think we delivered in spades on this project. We feel the result you see here is modern and fresh – with that Mediterranean feeling.
We approach our interior design projects differently because we are MAKERS. When you make things, they reflect where you belong. From the origin of the materials, to how the piece is crafted and feels, to the space it will fill within our clients’ homes. Here in Mallorca, we are surrounded by incredible artisans who’ve worked with local materials for centuries. They understand the island’s color palette, its textures and its soul. They know how to bring our ideas to life in a way that’s truly authentic. Take a look at some of the bespoke artisan pieces we brought to this project in particular…
Our philosophy is always to create beauty from something humble. We call it the charm of the imperfect. Local ceramicist, Arina Antonova gathers clay and rocks to craft one-of-a-kind lamps that literally bring the island into your rooms (above). And local carpenter Pedro Casanovas uses vintage wood (below) which is full of tiny variations of pattern and texture… when you sit at his table you feel the history and the magic of it.
We use lime paint, for example, from a local producer who has been harvesting, mixing and pigmenting lime for generations, and we apply it ourselves thoughtfully by hand. You can see the brush strokes on our linens, which we hand-paint on vintage fabric to give a softness that you simply couldn’t get from buying something new. For us, respect for craft and tradition is what sets interior design by a craftsperson apart. We bring care and curiosity to a project, and part of that is making these things by hand, one-by-one, specifically for our clients’ homes.
In bathrooms, there’s no better way to add color and texture than through the addition of handmade, local tiles and sinks. We are fortunate to have local craftsman at Huguet, a family-owned business that’s been producing pressed & pigmented cement tiles for generations. We worked closely with them to design these unique colors & patterns that bring such an individual touch to each of the bathrooms in this lovely home.
